Knox: Officially Pinoy
Yesterday marked the beginning of my official voting life. Isn’t it wonderful? I am a registered voter and in order to do it I had to commit an infamous political act- LIE! I am feeling the Philippine government so much… You see, I had to lie about my residence in order to avoid the crazy lines. It’s really quite poignant when I think about it. Poses some good questions like:
1) Does a good intention justify a wrong act?
2) If there is an easier way to go about something, why bother with doing something right but ultimately more difficult?
3) If I can’t find it in myself to do the right thing, how can I expect my government officials to?
Whatever the answer may be, I think that all young people should register! Voting is an integral right that is too often taken for granted. I went to register with my cousin, kuya Karlo, and it surprised me to know that he had registered way beforehand. He even knew the dates of registration and validation. Looking at him with his street-wise manner, I felt a sense of pride because it seemed as though he valued his right to vote more than the other snooty kids out there (namely me). He is not as privileged as I am, but unlike me he still believed that voting would make a difference. Very cool.
